Is it cookie?
For some reason, I haven't been sleeping enough lately. Fortunately, I know exactly what that reason is: Galactic Civilizations 2. I loves me some turn-based empire building strategy games. If I had more time available, I'd fire up Civilizations 4 and go buy the expansions. Maybe I'll hook that up for this weekend.
The next martial arts test approaches. I suppose I should sleep a bit before then. Like always, there's other life stuff in the way that prevents me from practicing as much as I could, but at this point good enough just is.
Currently I'm debating taking a vacation day on Monday or working on my Friday off and taking Monday off. I'm leaning towards working on Friday. It's easier to get that approved than to get a vacation day approved on such short notice. The difference is that moving days around requires me to check with my "self-directed work group," whereas a vacation day requires manager approval and signature. My particular manager is pretty scattered about this sort of thing; I can easily forsee getting approval to take the vacation day after the date has already passed.
The disadvantage will be that the drive on Friday afternoon (as opposed to Friday morning) will be extremely crowded. I guess that's why my car has air conditioning and a CD player. If I go that way, I anticipate arriving there at around 11pm or so.
I made beef stew yesterday using the oxtail meat I had left over from the oxtail stew experiment a couple of months ago. I used the traditional Chinese beef stew recipe my dad gave me. My dad's "recipe" didn't really include quantities ("Get 3 pounds of meat. Pour in water to cover the meat. Season with soy sauce, sugar, salt, chu hou sauce, etc."), so it's more of a set of assembly instructions than an actual recipe. I didn't get the quantities of seasoning quite right, but it was good enough. Usually you use the cheapest stew meat you can find for this stew, but the oxtail meat was taking up space in my freezer, and it made for a really nice stew. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it now.
I'm getting to know the neighbors' habits a bit better after a couple of weeks of observation. The people to the east are an old married couple, and I think the man works a night shift somewhere because he's always home during the day, and in the morning I see him drive up and come in as if he's really tired. The people to the west I know only through the sounds of them having sex, and the guy makes noises like he's trying to lift a refrigerator during that time. The people directly below are a mother and a worn-out looking, tattooed, teenage daughter who have nightly screaming matches and door-slamming competitions. From my window I can see an apartment to the south that has big parties every night of the weekend and some weekdays; they're far enough away that the noise doesn't bother me, but close enough that I could throw something at them if things got out of hand.
Work is boring. Real life is far more interesting and entertaining.
